This session will build on the foundation of the BGC/BUILD session, “Introduction to Federal Regulations Affecting International Students”. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how regulations are applied in actual advising appointments. This session will also provide insight on some of the choices/dilemmas that international students and advisors often face as they seek to successfully navigate a system with so many moving parts. Through various case scenarios, reenactments, and even role playing, ISSS staff will highlight and give substance to some of the challenges that immigration regulations present to international students and advisors alike.

Participants who attend this session will be able to:

  • recap and reinforce basic federal rules and regulations for international students through interactive scenarios presented in earlier sessions
  • learn at a deeper level some of the tough choices that regulations can present to students who have seemingly done everything right and to those who have made mistakes
  • see how navigating the U.S. educational system and the immigration system is often more an art than a science both for international students and advisors
